Houston Engagement Session by Still Life Media: Jessica + Justin

Who said that a house divided couldn’t be a happy home? Jessica Jones and Justin Cox may have gone to rival colleges, LSU and Tennessee, but business school united them. This power couple put their rivalry aside and they’re taking care of what is most important… their happiness. You can’t help but feel the love and healthy competition they have right through the photos by Jay at Still-Life Media.

Bride: Jessica Jones
Groom: Justin Cox

The Proposal
I proposed on a random Friday. Jessica had just come home from traveling and I asked her to lunch. Before we left her apartment, I told her that we hadn’t prayed in a while together and that I wanted to say a quick prayer before we left. She looked at me kind of funny because she thought something was wrong due to my very serious facial expression (I was nervous..lol). So I went through the normal prayer, praying for family, relationships, health, discipline and asked the Lord that if it were in His will that he would allow Jessica to be my wife. She literally hyperventilated because she didn’t see it coming.

Shoot Inspiration
The college shots were inspired by a house divided and house united approach. Jessica and I went to rival SEC schools (LSU & Tennessee) but we both went to the University of Houston for graduate school. Also because we went to business school together, that inspired the business shots. We wanted to give the “power couple” look.

How They Met

From the Groom: It was a Saturday like any other, I was relaxing after a long week at work. A couple of the guys had asked me to come out that night but I had passed because I was exhausted. One of my very good friends Bose called to let me know that there was a 40th birthday party she wanted to invite me too. Initially I refused, because I was so tired, but then my sister from another Mother, Sase, called to ask what was going on that night.  I told her about the party but told her I was not sure I was going; she eventually convinced me to go. Sase is persuasive like that. So I jumped in the shower and got dressed, went to pick up Sase and was prepared to not stay very long at the event. We walk in and as I surveyed the room I notice her. Standing tall, commanding the room, gorgeous and with the most beautiful smile I have ever seen. She had this mane of hair on her head, looking all Amazonian and herbal. But there was one problem, she was hanging around this guy almost the whole night, so I was not sure she was single (he would turn out to be her older brother). I kept my eye on her all night and eventually she moved from the guy’s table to a table with a group of 5 – 6 of her girlfriends. As any man with sense knows, it is extremely dangerous to try to penetrate a pack of babes in the wild, especially when you are not sure the lady you are after is single. So I sent Sase to do some Mission Impossible and Inspector Gadget work for me. Sase came back and said that the coast was clear, she was single and that her name was Dupe. The whole time Sase was giving me grief because she said I was “dulling” and I should just go talk to her. But a gentleman waits until the right moment, right? When I saw my opening, I walked up to her. She had her back to me, I put my hand on the small of her back, leaned in and said “Dupe right?” She turned around and smiled……and the rest is history.

From the Bride…To find a man who puts you first is amazing. I love Osa’s selfless spirit in everything he does he thinks about us not just himself .

How They Met

Mike and I crossed paths at my best friends birthday party 4 years ago. During the party we had a casual conversation, but that would be the extent of it. A few months later I got assigned to the same squadron that Mike was assigned to. We would see each other here and there in the organization, but still only engage in casual conversation. This went on for some time until we both started playing our favorite sport of softball. After being around Mike on a daily basis for 2 years playing the game that we loved, our relationship blossomed into more than a friendship.

The Proposal
Mike proposed to me on the weekend prior to his deployment to Afghanistan.  He and I were on a romantic weekend getaway at one of your favorite hotels. While sitting on the balcony overlooking the harbor, I turned around to him on one knee as he began expressing his love for me and his desire to make me his wife. Of course I accepted, and the rest is history….

You Make Loving You So Easy

From the GroomI could take the easy way out and say I love her obvious beauty, but that wouldn’t be enough. What I love the most is her drive to excel at everything she does. When she takes on a task you know you will get nothing but her best. She is the most dependable loving person person I know.

From the BrideThere are many things that I love about him, but one that sticks out the most is his love for his children. I remember vividly the first time that his kids came to visit. There was so much love flowing from all of them, it was beyond priceless. I knew at that moment, he was not only an awesome father, but a great man.

How They Met

“Sheldon and I met during our undergraduate studies at Louisiana State University (Geaux Tigers!). We were first introduced through mutual friends during the Fall of 2006. Of course, with our mutual friends we would see each other around occasionally, but there were never any eventful interactions. It would turn out to be the late spring and summer of 2007 before any rumblings of romance would be heard. With our endless list of similarities serving as our muse, we began our love affair and have never looked back. Our love for music is something that first brought us together. We enjoy traveling and attending concerts and music festivals together. We knew music had to be a part of our engagement shoot in some way.”

The Proposal

“Sheldon proposed on Easter Sunday in 2012 while his parents were in town for the weekend from Shreveport. I invited them to spend Easter with my family in New Orleans. Little did I know, the surprise engagement was the main reason they came into town. Our families spent other holidays together so it never crossed my mind that this would be “The Day”! Sheldon had been hinting for a while that he would propose around my graduation from my Master of Business Administration program, which at the time was only one month away. After 5 long years, I finally began to suspect that it would happen then. However, I soon realized he was just throwing me off all along!”

From the bride… “He never fails to make me smile and makes me feel extremely comfortable in my skin.”

Unconditional Love – Engagement Session from Keith Cephus Photography

It’s amazing to see the beauty that unfolds when two people follow with a trusting heart where they are being led. Michelle and Ahjah have a phenomenal story of strength and love. The groom-to-be, Ahjah, was severely injured in a motorcycle accident that changed his life forever. Michelle recalls when they met “from the start his personality and confidence out shined the obvious, he’s wheelchair bound.” It is clear that they’ve already faced the ultimate test of the covenant of marriage. The couple will continue their journey of unconditional love together by tying the knot on November 2, 2013.

Their e-session was shot by Keith Cephus Photography.

How They Met

The saying is true, you will find someone when you least expect it, or better yet when you stop looking for someone is when they will come around. That’s so true in the case of both myself and fiancée Ahijah. We met through mutual friends one night out while I was on vacation in VA where he lives.

After a few outings with friends, we exchanged numbers and became friends and never stopped. Im not one to call someone a ” best friend” unless i mean it, but he is definitely one. Hadj’s optimism and his independence is what impressed me and the support system that he has been to me, the fact of having someone to talk to, that doesn’t judge you and can keeps me going helps me to be more of a positive person, and most importantly have the same things in common such as our religious beliefs, as we are both Jehovah’s witnesses. Dec 2011 we began dating, got engaged in march 2013.

You Make Loving You So Easy
(Words From The Bride….. )

Many family members showed concern with my decision to date someone in a wheelchair because they felt that relationships are hard enough, so to add being with someone disabled and having to take care of them to the mix would be more than i can handle, while others felt that I was being desperate for the same reasons. Being a nurse in a way i think is a blessing for the both of us because i know what he can do, his limits and whatever comes our way as far as limitations i can handle it. There is nothing desperate about  dating a strong, good hearted, man that loves you who lives on his own, works ,drive and handles his business but because of unforeseen occurrence (which can happen to anyone of us ) is now siting down. We deal with the stares of those who don’t know or even people who may ask questions and it makes us both laugh, us being together has built a stronger confidence in me too which I absolutely love. We are definitely a different couple and that makes us stand out and we are both up for the challenge.  Love is hard to find, being superficial to save face for others is not who i am, and you can’t help who you fall in love with.

Cynthia and James met in college and soon they were inseparable.  Nothing could hinder their love, not even having to carry on a long distance relationship for two years.  It was clear to both of them that they had to spend the rest of their lives together, but James wanted to find the prefect moment to surprise Cynthia with a proposal. He decided to do it before Christmas when they went to a tree lighting show.  After walking around and taking in the heart warming decorations, James took Cynthia out of the cold and into a warm barnyard in a nearby zoo.  When James got down on one knee, Cynthia was so shocked that James had to ask her twice before she said, “Yes!”  Mike Topham Photography helped this fun loving couple capture their excitement over their upcoming nuptials in this lovely e-session shoot! We know Cynthia and James will have a beautiful winter wedding!

How They Met

James and I met in college. According to James, I was interested in him from the very beginning, but I remember it differently. All I know is that a few months after our initial meeting we were inseparable. We discussed everything with each other and I’m glad to say that even after five years it is still that way.

The Proposal

While participating in a long distance relationship for a few years James decided to pop the question before Christmas. That was the best gift ever and per James that will also be my birthday present for the year. Before James proposed I thought every date might be the time he would pop the question. I started to lose hope because nothing would happen at the end of our dates. A few days before Christmas we decided to go to the DC tree light show. It was freezing that night. We were there for about an hour and a half when we walked back to the front of the zoo. During that time people were saying that the shuttle was minutes away. I was ready for the shuttle, but James was like we haven’t seen everything. So we walked into a warm barnyard and looked at the llamas. Afterwards we walked towards a bench and started to look at the stars. My head was on his chest and he said to me” this is the perfect time for you to propose to me.”  At that moment I was thinking, “Ummm yeah right you need to propose to me!” After that he started to complain that something was poking him in the chest. I kept telling him that nothing was poking him and he proceeded to remove items from the inside of his jacket such as pencils and his cell phone. I asked him, “What are you doing?” At that moment he was like, “This is what I am doing,” as he got on his knee. I was dumbfounded. He asked me to marry him twice and then I finally said ” Yes!”

The Groom…He said he knew I was the one when he found out that I watch cartoons. Our parents make fun that we still watch cartoons. He loves me because I am supportive.

The Bride…I love that he balances me. When I’m not thinking straight he is able to keep me calm.

When Kevin proposed to Chintil, it was a sweet surprise. Chintil returned home on her birthday to find Kevin suspiciously moving around in the kitchen. He told Chintil he had a birthday surprise for her and then instructed Chintil to close her eyes and follow him.  When she opened her eyes, Chintil saw a beautiful birthday cake with the words, “Will you marry me?” written across the top! This couple celebrated their engagement by planning a creative e-session, which celebrated their love and highlighted Kevin’s career as a firefighter.  The fire and chemistry between this couple was captured by Natarsha N. The Proposal

THE CAKE- April 27, 2011

I returned home after going for a little pampering for my birthday. I was met at the door and asked to stay away from the kitchen. I laughed because I found it weird, but I agreed and got settled. Kevin approached me and asked if I was ready for my birthday present, I said, “Sure!” He took me by the hand and asked me to close my eyes and follow his lead. When we finally stopped he told me to open my eyes. When I opened my eyes there was a beautiful birthday cake that read “Will You Marry Me?” Shocked and surprised (hand covering mouth) I immediately started to cry! He asked me to turn around and when I did he was down on bended knee with the ring and our dog Major by his side. Overwhelmed with nerves and excitement Kevin asked me if I would make him the happiest man in the world and be his wife…….after I gained my composure I said YES! The rest is history and we’ve be inseparable ever since!

Cue Michael Bublé (or Frank Sinatra), “Come fly with me. Let’s fly, let’s fly away.” Risheè and Bryan’s love and beauty soar beyond the stars in this lovely engagement session. They met during college and maintained contact after Risheè transferred to another school. As their relationship blossomed, they encouraged and supported each other through undergrad to reunite and continue their life journey together. Their beautiful e-session was photographed by Castaldo Studios.

Groom: Bryan Paschal
Wedding date: November 10, 2013

How They Met

Risheè & Bryan first met on the campus of Oakwood University. During their college careers Risheè eventually transferred to Southern Adventist University to finish her undergrad studies and kept in touch with Bryan. The basic contact eventually bloomed into a friendship. Bryan and Risheè were able to spend hours on the phone laughing and talking with each other about ANYTHING. With a year of courting and meeting each other’s families it was apparent to both of them that their relationship was meant to be. With their blossoming relationship, Bryan and Risheè encouraged and supported each other throughout their final year of undergrad and many other life milestones.

The Proposal

The plan was put in motion a few months leading into the beginning of 2013. Bryan was ready to take his relationship with Risheè to new heights. After countless visits to different jewelry stores with her, he understood what type of ring would make her elated. So, he made a few visits of his own until he found the PERFECT ring. The plan was to propose during a birthday dinner.
Bryan ended up in “Citrus” where he negotiated the deal and decided on January 12th, 2013 as the day he would propose to Risheè.
With the date set Bryan sought out to invite individuals to witness the proposal. Bryan knew how much Risheè valued her family and close friends and told him on many occasions to make sure they were present. Adhering to his bride-to- be’s wishes, he did just that.
On the night of the engagement Bryan went to “Citrus” ahead of everyone else while Risheè got ready at the house with her friends. She later arrived with her cousins and friends.
After the Birthday Song concluded Bryan declared his love and appreciation of Risheè in an amazingly put together proposal speech, that surprised her and the family.
As Bryan got down on one knee, family and friends cheered him on as he proposed. As soon as Risheè saw her ring she grabbed it out of the box yelling “Yes, Yes, Yes”!!!

You Make Loving You So Easy

From him… When the courtship began I would often tell Rishee how beautiful she was. What I love most about her was her smile. There were days I would look through just about all her pictures on social networks (facebook) reminiscing of her smile. I would also often tell Rishee that her smile is one of the first things that caught his eye. I would tell Rishee that her smile could “light up a room”. As cliche as that phrase may be I meant it.

From her… There are over a hundred things I could state as to what I love about her fiance. If I had to pick just one it would be his sense of humor. For those that do not know Bryan, he tends to come off as serious and quiet. However, behind doors Bryan is the funniest person I know. I love the funny dances, and songs that he makes up at whim. What else, I enjoy about his sense of humor is that he always knows when to turn it on in order to “fix” my bad days. Unlike me, Bryan is definitely the dancer out of the two of us and he will definitely let his moves out for the reception. I CANT WAIT!

How They Met

We met after a subway outreach and all night prayer meeting at Times Square Church. Apparently, I was sitting on the ground of the lobby and he decided to “brighten up my day” by introducing himself. We quickly departed ways once we realized that our hearts had skipped a beat. After about a year and a half of waiting on God’s perfect timing, we began courting and we were pleasantly surprised to find that we were made for each other.

The Proposal

So Curtis bought the ring, which was an amazing blessing from the Lord. He asked my parents, who gave their blessing and he was basically going to keep it simple and spring it on me at dinner or something like that but thank God for using family and friends to intervene…they kept asking how he was going to propose to me and after much thinking and praying, the idea was birthed.

He picked one of the most special places to us – the Pier at Exchange Place in Jersey City, and he proceeded to invite a lot of our friends and family to come share in the moment. On our way back from a couples gathering in the city, we made our way to the Pier. The whole entire evening, I noticed he was acting shady and incoherent, but it still didn’t click! Apparently, everybody was converging on the PATH train AT THE SAME TIME – we were literally surrounded by our surprise guests. He finally came up with a safe detour…we grabbed a quick bite and after the danger passed, hopped on the train towards the Pier. It was the perfect crisp and clear night with a full moon rising over the city and as he led me to the tip of the Pier, our friends crept up behind us and started shouting, taking pictures and videos on their phones. Then he dropped to his knee and by this point I yelled “WHAT THE HECK” …tearing up, I finally realized that THIS WAS IT. He asked me to marry him and a ll I remember after that moment was I said YES!!!

You Make Loving You So Easy

From the Groom to beI could list all of the things that I love about Nkechi for days; from her breathtaking beauty to her awesome easy going personality. However, if I had to narrow it down to one trait I would have to say what attracts me most to Nkechi is her love and passion for the Lord. Before I ever even knew her name I would see her worshiping with the youth choir at church and I would marvel at her love and passion for Jesus. I never would have imagined that God would bless me to have her in my life but I am so thankful that He did.

From the Bride to be...The first time I met Curtis, I was blown away by his presence… Honestly, the one thing I love most about him is his quiet yet great faith in God – it is what initially attracted me to him and what ultimately motivated me to say “I do.” It was a breath of fresh air to find someone as passionate, relentless and fearless as Curtis. He often accuses me of stealing his rib from birth and I always ask what I did to deserve such an incredibly handsome and easy-going second half. I’m UBER excited for this awesome opportunity to enjoy the life that Christ paid for us to have as husband and wife for the rest of our days.

Brandi and Robert won big at love when they met each other at a night club in Vegas. They talked to each other over the phone and via email for a year before finally connecting again in person. When they officially started dating, their love for each other progressed quickly. Six months after exclusive dating, Robert took Brandi to the Turks and Caicos for her birthday, and he proposed to her while walking on the beach. Their outdoor e-session captured by Ross Oscar Knight Photography is full of beautiful greenery and city-scapes, but Brandi and Robert’s gorgeous smiles stand out in every picture!

How They Met

I’m from California and Robert is from Georgia. In 2007 while vacationing with friends in Las Vegas, Robert and I met in a nightclub. During our brief meeting we exchanged information and went our separate ways. Finding our potential “soul mate” was the last thing on our minds. Due to the distance between us, we spent the next year we keeping in contact with emails and texting. We had our first date in 2008 when Robert had an overnight stay in San Diego for work. After that date, we went back to the texting and emailing and we didn’t flourish into an “official” relationship until December of 2010.

The Proposal

After 6 months of exclusive dating Robert took me on a trip to Turks & Caicos for what I thought to be a Birthday trip. Our first night there we had dinner at an amazing steakhouse and then took a walk on beach. We talked about everything from our relationship, family, friends, careers and our faith. In the depth of our conversation I realized that Robert was no longer walking with me and when I stopped and looked back for him I found him down on one knee with a gorgeous ring asking for my hand in marriage. In disbelief, smiling and shaking I said, “YES!!!”

You Make Loving You So Easy

From the Bride….The one thing that Robert says he loves the most about me is the dedication I have to our friendship. Our journey started in a very non traditional way. With us living on opposite sides of the country, we were force to solely rely on having friendship in order to build an unbreakable bond throughout the years. That foundation made us so close to the point that we realized we couldn’t stand to be apart, which led us to where we are now. The ability to do just about anything under the sun with your partner and enjoy it is so important and we both value that. Being lovers was nearly impossible for us without our friendship

From the Groom…Finding One quality that I love the most about Robert is hard to do.. I don’t think there is ever just one thing that you love about your soul mate. If I had to choose one thing, this may sound cliche’, but the one thing I lost most about Robert is his heart. He has a huge heart and always uses his heart in making decisions for us, and our family. There’s never a time where I can say that he places his needs before our family. Robert was raised to think about how he affects others and consider peoples feelings when making decision. He uses that tactic in our relationship and does any and everything to protect my feelings, and my heart. He is the most selfless, God fearing man that I know and that makes me fall in love with him over and over again.

This lovely engagement session in a park reminds us of an “I Love Lucy” episode. Irielys and Michael really look like a perfect match and the way Michael proposed also had a touch of movie-magic. Once Irielys said “yes,” Michael revealed a pathway outlined with rose pedals leading to a table with a chocolate cake and berries along with a photographer ready to capture the special moment. This beautiful photo session was photographed by Ricky Serrano Photography.

How They Met & The Proposal

We met through a mutual friend on Myspace. Michael proposed on Sunday October 14, 2012 just a few weeks before our five year anniversary. After church, we went to have dinner with my parents and at the restaurant Michael asked them for my hand in marriage. My parents delightfully said yes. After dinner, Michael told me that we were going to a place we had never been to before to have dessert. I didn’t really think of it as more than just a celebration because my parents had given us their blessing for us to get married. Little did I know what was coming my way! As we are on the way to this mysterious place Michael asks me “Do you trust me?”. I looked at him, laughed and said “Of course I do!” then he responded, “Ok, I need to ask you for a favor….close your eyes.” So after 10 minutes of having my eyes closed, we arrive at this place where I ge t out of the car, enter through doors and walk up a set of stairs (still with my eyes close and holding Michael’s hand) until we come to a stop. Michael tells me “I have been waiting for this moment for a long time.” At this point my heart wanted to explode!! He continued by telling me how happy and blessed he felt to have me in his life and that nothing would make him happier than to have me as his wife. I opened my eyes to find him kneeling in one knee holding a ring and asking me to marry him. Of course, I said “YES!” Behind him was a pathway outlined of red rose pedals leading up to a table with a delicious chocolate cake and berries! It was the best day of my life!! Michael had reserved the wedding venue of the Gaylord Palms Resort just for us, it was beautiful!! The best part of it all was that Michael got Photographer Ricky Serrano to capture the whole thing!! So my better-than-a-movie-absolutely-perfect- marriage-proposal is a day I will cherish forever!!

You Make Loving You So Easy

From him… I love the way she is cares for me. I also love that she is willing to get out of her comfort zone and try new things.

From her… I love that Michael is the sweetest and most caring man you’ll ever meet!

How They Met & The Proposal

In 2010 I had the opportunity to go to Nigeria for my brother’s wedding and upon arriving I had to meet up with him to deliver a package that was sent from his sister for him. So after we met he asked me to join him and his twin brother for lunch and after that we just stayed in touch on the phone and then in 2011 he told me that I was his wife.

So a few weeks leading up to the proposal, Mfoniso asked me if I have ever had French food before, so i told him no. To my astonishment, he asked if there were any French restaurants in Dallas, so i told him to look up some and if he found one, then i would go with him. A few days later, he told me he found one he likes and that we are going there on a date. I was so excited and started counting down the days. So on March 25, 2012, after church, i rested then got dressed and headed to the restaurant for dinner. on the way to the restaurant, he started telling me how blessed he was to have me in his life. I was blushing!! When we got there, the restaurant was nice, great ambience and music. So we sat down, and ordered our meal. After the meal i decided to order one of my favorite desserts “creme brulee” then went to the ladie’s room. Upon my return, we started talking, then the waiter brought my dessert and right at that same moment, Mfoniso asked me “where is the restroom?” behind me i replied. He got up and i picked up my spoon about to take a spoonful of my dessert, right then i looked up and saw him on one knee beside me. He pulled out the ring and said to me “Ufanima” (which means my friend and love) will you marry me? And i was in shock and nodded my head then later managed to mutter the word YESSS!!!

Jasmine and Mark have known each other for years. They met in high school after being introduced by a teacher, and they soon developed a strong friendship. Call it coincidence, fate or destiny: Jasmine and Mark decided to go to the same college in Florida.  After a month of college, their friendship evolved into an intense romance.  Years later, Mark pulled off a nostalgic proposal.  He took Jasmine to their high school bus stop and asked her to marry him at the place where he first laid eyes on her. Since they currently live in New York City, this fun loving couple decided to allow Cendino Teme Photography to capture their excitement, while posing in front of famous NYC landmarks.  You are going to love the funny faces Jasmine makes in some of her pictures. She is so adorable.  We wish them the best of luck on their big day.

How They Met

Mark and I met sophomore year of high school after being introduced by a teacher. We had a history class together, and lived on the same street. Through the remaining years of high school, we developed a close relationship and eventually became good friends. Coincidentally, we both decided to attend the University of South Florida. After one month of being away at college, we began officially dating. Seven years later, the rest is history. I feel blessed to be marrying both my high school friend and my college sweetheart.

The Proposal

This past December, Mark and I flew back home to Florida to spend the Christmas holidays with our families. On the afternoon of December 27, Mark insisted that we revisit our high school bus stop. After much hesitation, I finally agreed. Once we arrived at our old bus stop, Mark got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was in total disbelief and shock. Mark wanted to ask me to marry him at the very place that he first laid eyes on me – our bus stop. It was special and unique, much like our relationship. We spent the afternoon dining at a restaurant on the beach. I will never ever forget that day.

The Engagement Session

Mark and I currently live in New York City. Being that the wedding will be held back home in Florida, I wanted to make sure our engagement session showcased our current lives as New Yorkers. I wanted the focus and emphasis to be on the landmark sights of New York City, while still casually capturing our fun-loving personalities and this special time in our relationship.

I instantly fell in love with Cendino Teme Photography after seeing his e-sessions and weddings featured here on Munaluchi Bridal and ESSENCE Online a few months before we got engaged. I loved the way his revealing images really represented the couples’ relationships. After finding out that he was also a fellow Floridian, I knew I had to hire him to capture that special time in our lives.

Looking Forward to…

Jasmine says: “walking down the aisle to marry my best friend and the love of my life, while sharing that same love with our friends and families during Valentine’s Day weekend.”

Mark says: “seeing the girl that I’ve seen grow up since she was 15 years old, finally walk down the aisle to me.”

Wedding Planning is Tough

I’m learning that planning a Florida wedding from New York City is not easy, but with the help of my wedding coordinator and our families, everything will work out fine. The wedding will take place during Valentine’s Day weekend, so it’s important that our wedding guests really enjoy a loving experience on our special day.

Yomi first spotted his fiance Eji when a mutual friend brought her over to his house for a get together. Yomi was immediately enraptured by Eji’s beauty and he made it his mission to get her phone number.  Well, Yomi wasn’t successful. Eji had reservations about giving her number to someone she had just met, so Yomi had to settle for her email address. However, to Eji’s surprise, Yomi actually contacted her and they embarked upon a beautiful three year romance. When Yomi was sure he wanted to be with Eji for life, he pulled off the surprise proposal of Eji’s dreams. He proposed to her at a Valentine’s Day event at their church in front of family and friends! To celebrate their engagement this fashionable couple had a gorgeous outdoor e-session. Vanessa Marie Photography captured their undeniable love. We can’t wait to see pictures from their Chicago nuptials which will be coordinated by Kesh Events. Congrats!

How We Met (Yomi’s Version)

I moved to Philadelphia in August, 2010 and I think it was on a Friday night in October, 2010 that I met Eji for the first time. I was having drinks with a few friends at my place while waiting for another friend before we headed out for the night in Philly.  He finally arrived with a guest (Eji) and I remember just being mesmerized by her beauty. I played it off by not gawking or making her feel uncomfortable.

I believe she asked to use the bathroom and I told her the guest bathroom downstairs was occupied but she could go upstairs to use one of the bathrooms in the bedrooms. So while she was in the bathroom, I asked my friend if she was his date and he said that she was just a friend that was new to Philly. At this point, I started strategizing on how I was going to make this woman mine; I just knew she had to be mine.

So we finished up with our drinks, and called a cab to take us out. Eji asked if she could leave her jacket at my place and I enthusiastically told her she could definitely leave it behind. Unbeknownst to her, I was hoping she would have a reason to come back so that I could have some more time to get to know her. So we headed out and did some bar hopping in Philly and I made sure I didn’t get distracted that night by keeping my eyes on the prize – Eji.  I proceeded to ask Eji for her number and she said could not give me her number but was willing to take my number (apparently she wouldn’t have called me if I did give her my number). My ego got in the way and I told her that I don’t give out my number either and that we had a problem because I had to see her again. She laughed at my demands, and initially offered to add me on Facebook. I told her I wasn’t a chump and she need to quit playing around. So we came to a compromise with her giving me her email address.

So while I was in Nigeria, I exchanged a few emails with her and finally got her number after I got back from Nigeria. We went on a few dates shortly after that and I knew then that I had to make her my girlfriend. We were both pretty busy during this period; I was studying for the GMAT, while she was studying for her exams. I slipped her a note during one of our study date nights and we have been together ever since.

The Proposal (Yomi’s Version)

After dating Eji for about a year, I knew she was the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. I actually got the proposal idea from her; Eji had mentioned that she would love to have her proposal in front of friends and family. Eji is really into surprising people so I figured why not surprise her instead.

I started off the weekend by surprising her. I told her that we were not going to be able to celebrate Valentine’s day that year because I was tied up with work in Houston and she had study for exams. I felt bad lying to her and knew she was going to be disappointed in me for not coming. What I ended up doing was catching a flight to Philly, and calling her when I landed, to ask her if she was hungry because I knew she was going to be staying up late studying. So I told her that I was going to have Chinese food delivered to her place around 1am, and when she went to open the door expecting Chinese delivery guy, she saw me instead.

I heard from one of our mutual friends that she was going to be a moderator at a Valentine’s day banquet event at our church in Philly. She was going to be taking questions from the audience and asking the married couples at the event to answer the questions. So I strategized with the MC of the event to put her on the spot and have her answer questions about her own relationship. After she was done talking about our relationship, the MC was to put me on the spot too. Then I was to reciprocate and say all nice things about Eji and also give the DJ a hint to start playing Marry Me by Bruno Mars and then I propose to her.

Boy, was I nervous. First of all, I think about how I was going to hide the ring that night. My pants were very slim-fit so I could not put the ring case in my pocket without having a bulging object showing in my pocket. So, I had a hand in my pocket the whole time. Secondly, the proposal speech I memorized all weekend  simply disappeared from my head when the MC called me to talk about our relationship. Heck, I didn’t even remember I had to give the DeeJay a cue to play the Bruno Mars song. Anyway, I mumbled a few sentences together and got on my knee to ask her to marry me.

I vividly remember the look of shock on her face when I proposed to her and also seeing the tears of joy on her face made me very happy.

How We Met (Eji’s Version)

I had just moved to Philadelphia about 2months prior and was still getting to know people around the area. On this faithful evening in October, a new friend I had met, Chisom, came to show me around. However, before heading out into the city he decided to take me to see a buddy of his [This would be Yomi]. On getting there, it seemed like they had already started pre-gaming, but I wasn’t paying anyone no mind at the time as I was just interested in seeing what Philly had to offer. Unknowingly, Yomi had been scoping me from the moment I walked in the door and had apparently vowed to ‘have’ me…..lol [see me see confidence!]. Anywho, fast forward to the rest of the evening, he was bugging me for my phone number, I’m telling you, dude was relentless!!!…..lol but I refused seeing that I had just met him and I believed if he really wanted my number, he could ask Chisom for it. Unknown to me, he did already ask Chisom for permission to talk to me, but of course I had to form like a correct babe. Long story short, I guess his bugging got to me, that I decided to just get him off my case and I gave him my email address, thinking “he won’t really email, no one emails in these situations”…WRONG!!! He was in Nigeria for his cousin’s wedding and emailed me unexpectedly.

Next thing we know, we are emailing back and forth and became pretty good friends. A decent while later, while we were studying together, I for a test at school and he supposedly studying for his GMAT, he proceeds to ask me to be his girlfriend….. Coz I was honestly surprised at the question, I didn’t pick an option lol. Apparently, what I said was “Oh, Gosh! You’ve got to be kidding me!” lol. Anyways, I said yes and here we are 3+yrs later and excited to commit our lives to each other.

The Proposal (Eji’s Version)

For some odd reason, boo likes to plan things during my study periods lol. I was preparing for a test the Thursday before Valentine’s Day. We had already discussed that we wouldn’t be seeing each other during this period so I wasn’t thinking much about the season or expecting anything. On this night, Gracie and I were studying in my apartment, and he calls to check up on me. I happen to be hungry (like I always am hehe) so I am telling him about it and he says that he ordered Chinese food for me and it would be delivered to my door (say what now?! Lol). I then jokingly said to Gracie, “watch it’ll be Yomi at my door” and lo and behold, I opened my door and it was him!!!!  boy was I shocked! I had spoken to him ALL Dang on day! How did I miss him at the airport?? Lol. Later that night, I asked him if he had any more surprises for me and he answered “no!”. the Saturday comes around, and we had a valentine’s day Twice as Sweet event at church (Shout out to RCCG Living spring SOULution team!!) which we attended. I had to anchor a segment of the event, and surprisingly, I got put on the spot to speak about how I had maintained my relationship all this while (ain’t nobody got time to hear all of that…lol). Anyway, the video explains the rest of it from here on out……

When you are out with your partner and strangers come up to you just to comment on how much they admire your chemistry, you know your bond is strong.  This happens all the time to Lenee and James. The couple met years ago when Lenee reached out to James for advice on starting a business. Now after an incredible 20 years of love and friendship, these destined lovebirds are getting married. Keith Cephus Photography captured their undeniable love in their e-session, which was inspired by the couple’s theme song, “At Last.”  Finally, it is Lenee and James’ time and we couldn’t be happier for them.  Can’t wait to see images from their wedding!

How They Met

Lenee’ was on a quest to seek advice for starting her very own business at a local mall. While speaking with a business owner, she was suggested to walk over and introduce herself to James, another business owner in the mall. For a few weeks they spoke about business, but as time went on they decided to go out on their very first date. It didn’t take very long for the love affair to begin. For the first 3 years, they saw each other every single day starting from their first date. This love was destined to follow its course. They had such a unique love that strangers would often stop them in restaurants and on the street just to comment on the connection and chemistry that they seemed to share.

The Proposal

On January 1st. The very first thing that James said to Lenee was: “When would you like to get married?” Lets Set the date! Let’s start off this year right! He was passionate, focused and to the point…”

The Engagement Session

The engagement session was amazing. James and Lenee’ had an incredible love and friendship for a little over 20 years, therefore the shoot was based on the theme song “At Last”…It was finally their time! The goal of the shoot was to hopefully be able to show their love for one another through the photo’s without ever having to say a word.

Their Photographer

Their creatively gifted and talented photographer was none other than Mr. Keith Cephus. Coincidentally Lenee’ & Keith met a little over a year ago at the bridal show in Virginia Beach, VA.  A year later Lenee’ stumbled across a photoshoot by Mr. Cephus for a newly engaged couple and decided to give him a call. Through that conversation they realized that they had already met a year prior. From there the magic began. “Keith is such an out of the box photographer. We connected immediately!”

Wedding Planning

Lenee’ is the Owner of: Lenee’ Valentine, Inc. She plans Events & Wedding for a living. The month of September is usually when her season is beginning to slow down, however this turned out to be her busiest month of the year. She was contracted to do another wedding in the same month along with a half dozen last minute events from clients. Busy, busy month… but it is still extremely exciting at the same time. James has been amazing with helping to keep her focused and balanced through all the planning.

What woman wouldn’t want to spend a day strolling the streets of Paris with the love of their life! What could top that? Well, how about getting a surprise proposal from your love in front of the historic Notre Dame Cathedral. Oh la la indeed!  Groom to be Nexus, pulled off the perfect proposal by telling Ijeoma that they were going on a tour of Paris and that the man accompanying them was just a tour guide. However, when he proposed their “tour guide,” who was really a professional photographer, pulled out his camera and captured every beautiful moment. Afterward, the couple did a three hour photo shoot throughout the city, visiting the Louvre, Le Pont des Arts (also known as the “Love Lock” bridge) and the Place de la Concorde! Does it get anymore romantic?!  Their excitement shines in every picture taken by Antoine Monfajon Photographe. We wish Ijeoma and Nexus all the best, and we look forward to seeing pictures from their summer 2015 nuptials.

How They Met

We met over three years ago at the MOMA in NYC. We’ve only been dating for six months but have been good friends for three years prior. He proposed on our sixth month anniversary. He came up with the idea of celebrating our anniversary in Paris. After an elegant lunch at Laperouse, in the heart of Paris, he told me he hired a private tour guide to show us around the city. Our first stop was the Notre Dame Cathedral. We went in, prayed, and as soon as we walked out, he proposed right outside the church. I was very surprised, and it turned out that our “tour guide” was actually a photographer who he hired to capture the moment. It was lots of fun and I loved every moment. Thereafter we went on a three hour photo shoot throughout the city. We took pictures at the Louvre, Place de la Concorde, and Le Pont des Arts. It was great.

Romantic E-Session by Ubara Photo: Hawa and Vincent

Walking down the halls of John Bartram High School there was one person on Hawa’s mind, Vincent. Their story mirrors that of a 90s romantic teen comedy. She was the shy girl in love with the star soccer player, who every girl wanted. During her junior year, they took English together and she used this opportunity to build a friendship, which would one day turn into love. The groom chose Thanksgiving, a day that for many represents family and love to propose. As Hawa appreciated the sight of both their families together as one, he took that moment to ask her to be his number one fan forever. To highlight their engagement this couple wanted someone who could perfectly illustrate their idea of glamorous old Hollywood. They decided to use a classmate of hers at Ubara Photo, who was able to capture the couple’s passion. They pictures show what evolved from a teenage crush turned into everlasting love, without losing their playful nature. We look forward to seeing pictures from their upcoming August nuptials. Best of luck!

How They Met

It all started at John Bartram High School. Vincent was the school soccer star that all the girls pined over; he always managed to steal the spotlight. As for me, I was shy and much more reserved, but once I saw him, I knew I had to have him. Vincent and I shared a class together junior year, and being the jock of the school he received many privileges, such as teachers pretending he was not absent from class. One of these days that he was absent, I took it upon myself to pick up an extra homework sheet as I left class. This was going to be my chance to talk to the most popular boy in school. Soon this had become my routine, making sure he received his homework, but Vincent seemed oblivious to my admiration; however, we started to build a friendship. All I needed was time but time passed and the school year slowly drifted away as spring approached. My mother told me that we would be moving, which meant that I would have to transfer schools. On my last day at Bartram High, Vincent and I exchanged numbers so that we would keep in touch and we did. Feelings blossomed between us and from then on, we were practically inseparable.

The proposal. We want to hear all about it!

His proposal was sweet and thoughtful because the people that meant most to us were there as witnesses. It was during Thanksgiving and honestly, I was enjoying watching the two families together. I was seated to the right of Vincent and we all went around the table expressing what we were thankful for. It was Vincent’s turn to say what he was thankful for he stood up and began giving thanks to each person sitting at the table. He started to his left walking around the table slowly, saying something special about each person and giving thanks to them. As he approached me, he laid his hands gently on my shoulder and I felt them tremble. He began…
“There is nothing more special than having this great woman by my side and I am most thankful for her.”
He got on his knees and I could feel my temperature rise as blood rushed to my cheeks. He continued telling me how thankful he was that I was in his life and finished with those famous words…”Will you, Hawa Bengeh, make me the happiest guy in the world by marrying me?” After a quick pause from shock, I said “Yes!” We hugged long and then he gave me a kiss and ended…
“Yes there is nothing more special than having this great woman by my side than having her by my side as my wife.”
We all celebrated. It was wonderful!

The engagement session

My engagement theme was Old Hollywood Glam.  My photographer was remarkable.  She brought my imagination and dreams to picture. She really helped me and Vincent accomplish the look we wanted.

Your Photographer

I went to school with my photographer, TG Anderson/ Ubara Photo.  After graduation, I saw a lot of her work from some classmates and her work impressed me. I knew she was the only person I trusted to capture a moment so special. I loved how she really brought her clients ideas to life and she was very professional.

Looking forward to…

I’m looking forward to becoming Mrs. Vincent Jallah. To think those daydreams I had in class of being his wife are coming to a reality is surreal, I feel like the luckiest girl in the world. I cannot wait to share this moment with all of my loved ones.

Wedding planning is tough…

One word to describe the planning…stressful! I am a neat freak and I want everything to be perfect, so planning a wedding has not been a walk in the park at all. I am so grateful for all the assistance I have received from friends and family, but I still stress and over-think everything. I am so appreciative of my wedding designer, Lynn from LilyVevents because she helps relieve the stress. It’s a process! Making those big decisions is hard work. It can become time consuming and overwhelming at times considering that I have to work and take care of our kids, but it’s the tiny details that makes it even more challenging; like which silverware set to use for the table setting and what entrees to choose. However, those same tiny details make everything special. Yes, it’s a process, but I can’t wait to make my ideas transform into reality and watch everything unfold.   As a couple, Vincent has been extremely helpful and supportive. He pretty much lets me have my way and I love it!

Outdoor Philadelphia E-Session Honoring Black History by Adachi Photography: Naomi and Michael

When Naomi walked into the room at a community event, the only person she could see was Michael.  It could have been love at first sight, or it could have been because Michael is REALLY tall.  Either way, Naomi was intrigued and she wanted to spark a conversation with him, but she had just gotten all four of her wisdom teeth pulled out! Months later this tall handsome man was still on Naomi’s mind. They both work for community organizations in Philadelphia, so Naomi decided to send Michael an email to talk about “work stuff,” and the rest is history.  Michael decided to propose to Naomi on February 6th, the one year anniversary of when she first emailed him. He proposed to her outside of the Art Museum at which they had their first date. To celebrate their upcoming union, Naomi and Michael wanted to have an engagement shoot that truly reflected their personality, their love for Philadelphia and their love for Black History.  So, they teamed up with Adachi of Adachi Photography, and decided to start their E-Session at their home to show how they are in their own element. Then they hit the streets, taking pictures in places that “screamed Philly.”  The couple shares “We knew we wanted to highlight one of the many awesome murals that Philly is known for, one that celebrated Black greatness and power, thus the W.E.B DuBois mural ‘Mapping Courage’.”  This couple’s love for each other and their culture radiates in every picture, and we wish them the best on their upcoming nuptials.

How They Met

From the bride to be…I first saw Michael at a Community Event. Both of the organizations that we worked for were receiving grants from a small foundation in North Philly and when I walked through the door, the first thing I saw was him…..’cause he’s REALLY tall. I, unfortunately, couldn’t really talk because I had just gotten ALL FOUR of my wisdom teeth out! I did go up to the stage to very quickly talk about my organization, but we didn’t speak at all that day.

Fast forward many months later. This very tall, elusive guy is still on my mind, so I decided to email him to talk about “work” stuff…..ways to collaborate, development shared programming, yada yada yada. We decided to meet, but before we were to meet on work stuff, Michael told me about a Happy Hour that he would also be at. I went to that Happy Hour, we talked for a spell, I got giddy, and we parted ways. We met on “work” stuff the next week, and made plans to go out the week after…..on a personal tip. Well, I got sick, like really sick, and we couldn’t go out, but he insisted on coming over and bringing soup, so I obliged, swollen face and all. Fast forward a couple of weeks, major surgery and an emergency weekend in the hospital, we had our very first date in March 2012 at the Philadelphia Art Museum, then Northstar, a neighborhood bar. And the rest, my friends, is Black History.

He proposed on February 6th at the same place we had our first date, a year to the date of when I first emailed him.

The Proposal

From the Groom to be …I decided that I would propose to Naomi on February 6th, the one year anniversary of when she first emailed me. Earlier that evening we had a social event to go to, so Naomi and I met up after work and went to the event together. I stayed in my work clothes, which is a suit and tie. The box that the ring was in was so big that there was no way that I could keep it in my pocket without getting caught, so I decided to put it in my briefcase. When we arrived at the event I brought my briefcase inside with me, because I didn’t want the ring to be out of my sight, even for a second. Naomi noticed that I brought my briefcase with me, and thought I was behaving oddly. After we left the event we stopped somewhere and got takeout. I couldn’t eat a thing because I was so nervous. Naomi noticed this as well.

We usually pass the Art Museum on the way home, so I asked Naomi if she wanted to walk around the museum for a bit before we concluded the evening. (Our first date was at the Art Museum.) By this time I had put the ring in my pocket. Naomi ran up the Art Museum steps, but I was walking very slowly. (I was afraid of the ring falling out of my pocket.) We finally got to the top of the steps and I launched into a long soliloquy about our relationship. Naomi got this really goofy smile on her face, and took off the glove on her left hand. I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me, and she immediately started CRYING and saying (very affectionately) “Shut up! Shut up!” I was down on my knee for what seemed like two minutes and she still hadn’t said yes, and she was still crying. At this point I was getting worried and I started to think that maybe I had called her one of my ex-girlfriends names. Also there were a group of people hanging out about 100 feet or so from where we were, and I was worried that they would see a woman crying and see me hanging around her and think “What did this creep do to her?” Eventually she said yes and we went home.

Long story, but the strange facts.

Engagement Session Inspiration

We wanted to take our photos in places that screamed “Philly”. We’re both transplants, I’m from Harlem and Michigan, he’s from California and Virginia (I know, long stories), but Philly has become our home. We knew we wanted to highlight one of the many awesome murals that Philly is known for, one that celebrated Black greatness and power, thus the W.E.B DuBois mural “Mapping Courage”. I had visited a park in south Philadelphia a couple of months before the photo session, and saw this beautiful gazebo and knew I wanted to take pictures there as well! Our wonderful photographer, Adachi, picked some other spots to shoot that really fit us. We took pictures in our home, doing our normal morning routine because we wanted to show how we were in out own element.

Their Photographer

We first met Adachi before we go engaged, at a wedding expo called Lovesick in 2012. We talked to her and really loved her style and her personality, so I put her in my mental rolodex “just in case”. Well, almost a month after that, Michael proposed, and Adachi was the first person I contacted! We met face to face and just loved her vibe and her photography style, so we decided to go with her! Adachi was the first “vendor” we solidified for the wedding, and we’re so glad she’s out photographer!

Looking forward to the Wedding

We both are looking forward to seeing our family and our “adopted” family coming together and having the greatest party ever! We’re a fun, slightly silly couple, we don’t take ourselves too seriously, so when it’s all said and done, we want to have a good time!

Wedding Planning Process

Wedding planning thus far has been great! We have all of the “big” items situated, venue, caterers…..DRESS! So, the next six months is really focused on getting the decorations and “style” of the wedding situated.

Jasmin learned that finding love at college wasn’t just for students when she met Ricardo at Emory University. After sending him a few work related emails, she decided to be more aggressive if she wanted more than a quick chat at the water cooler. She decided to have a colleague introduce the two in person and was able to set up a lunch date. In the 10 months that followed Ricardo knew she was the one, he fell in love with both Jasmin and her young daughter. As they surveyed their newly purchased home the groom dropped down to his knees and asked her to build their lives together, they eloped soon after and now are looking forward to celebrating with their family and friends. They selected Rich Rouleau of Concept-A Photography for their shoot; he transported the couple into the Harlem Renaissance in this enchanting e-session. We know their summer wedding will be something to remember. Good luck on your big day!

The Engagement Session

We love the glamour and regalia of the Harlem Renaissance and the Old South. We wanted to marry both of those eras into our photo shoot. We went to Savannah to capture the charm of the South and it is one of our favorite places to go. Our photographer really understood what we wanted and the captured it perfectly. Thank you, Rich!

Looking Forward To…

We both never got the chance to tell the world what our union means to us. We just eloped and that was it. We are looking to this moment– to celebrate us, our kids, and our life. Despite it all, we are here and we grateful to be able to celebrate with those we love and cherish.

Wedding Planning is Tough…

It has been a breeze for us, honestly. The day we eloped, we knew we were going to throw a wedding on our 5th year anniversary. We had picked out a venue, did all the research etc… so I think we have not felt the stress of it. Check back with us in August 2014!! :)
